Eastern Winery Exposition, the East’s Largest Industry Event, to Take Place March 22-24 in Syracuse, NY

SYRACUSE, NY—The Eastern Winery Exposition, now in its sixth year, is the largest trade show and conference for the wine and grape industries east of the Rockies. And all indicators point to a larger event than ever. EWE was last in Syracuse in 2015 with over 1,000 industry members in attendance. Now, still three months in advance of the 2017 event, 200 industry members have already registered.

The trade show, with more than 190 exhibiting companies under contract (also ahead of last year’s figures), opens at 11:00 a.m. on March 23 and runs through 2:30 p.m. on March 24.

A day of two single-theme workshops takes place March 22, featuring New Containers, Closures and Bottling Issues, and Fruit Wine, Mead and Cider. On March 23-24 the two-day conference takes place with 20 sessions addressing viticulture, enology, and money, marketing & management issues. The program is 100% grape and wine focused and designed to offer practical, take-home information to improve a vineyard or winery’s bottom line for a range of attendees, from those in the planning stages to industry veterans.

Two popular wine and grape events will also take place in conjunction with the 2017 EWE. The Wine Sensory Analysis Workshop, for those seeking a deeper understanding of wine sensory evaluation and its impact on a winery’s success, kicks the week off March 20-21. The License to Steal wine marketing conference, the event where wineries, growers and ancillary entities willingly contribute and collaborate on marketing ideas, takes place March 23-24. With the LTS focus on wine marketing issues particular to Eastern states and markets, it is a natural fit for EWE.

EWE rounds out with multiple networking and social events, a blogging station, meet the authors, and more. Those who register early will receive the largest discounts. Advance rate discounts run through February 28, and Pre-show rates through March 21.

Who Should Attend: EWE is a production wine industry conference and trade show designed for the specific issues and needs of vineyards and wineries east of the Rockies, and has stayed true to the commitment of a wine and grape-focused program. Accordingly, it is a valuable resource for any commercial vineyard and winery owners, operators and employees, whether in the start-up phase or the expansion phase. Conference content is geared towards both the newcomer and the veteran alike. This year, fruit winemakers, mead makers and cider makers will also find the Wednesday workshop on these beverages worthwhile, and many of their production products for sale at the trade show. The Eastern Winery Exposition is sponsored by Wines & Vines and Practical Business Solutions and is supported by 24 state and industry associations.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Registration Now Open for the 2017 Eastern Winery Exposition in Syracuse, NY

SYRACUSE, NY—The Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE), the largest trade show and conference for the wine and grape industries east of the Rockies opened registration at 1:00 p.m. today at EasternWineryExposition.com. EWE, now in its sixth year, will take place at the Oncenter in Syracuse, NY from March 22-24. A day of two single-theme workshops takes place March 22, featuring New Containers, Closures and Bottling Issues and Fruit Wine, Mead and Cider. On March 23-24 the two-day conference takes place with sessions addressing viticulture, enology, and money, marketing & management issues. The trade show, featuring more than 200 industry suppliers, opens at 11:00 a.m. on March 23 and runs through 2:30 p.m. on March 24. In 2015, the last year EWE took place in Syracuse, over 1,000 industry members attended.

Show Manager Bob Mignarri mentioned two noteworthy developments for 2017. First, the co-location of the License to Steal wine marketing conference, March 23-24. With its focus on wine marketing issues particular to Eastern states and markets, it is a natural fit for EWE. Second, the opening of the five-star Marriott hotel located just two blocks from the Oncenter.  Mignarri visited the new hotel recently and was quite impressed by the multi-million dollar renovation. He believes it – and the close proximity to EWE – will be well received by participants.

Mignarri also noted that those who register early will receive the largest discounts. Early bird rates run through December 21, advance rates through February 28, and pre-show rates through March 21. For example, those who register for the Workshop+Conference pass would save $150.00 by registering at the Early Bird rate, rather than at the conference itself.

The Eastern Winery Exposition is sponsored by Wines & Vines and Practical Business Solutions and is supported by 23 state and industry associations.

License to Steal Wine Marketing Conference to Partner with the 2017 Eastern Winery Exposition

Syracuse, NY—The sixth annual Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE) announced the co-location and collaboration of the License to Steal Wine Marketing Conference and the Eastern Winery Exposition, March 22-24 at the Oncenter in Syracuse, NY.

License to Steal (LTS) is produced by the Ohio Wine Producers Association and has traditionally been held in April in Geneva, OH. The program emphasizes strategies, approaches, and marketing ideas with the goal of generating winery revenue and profitability. It is geared to owners, operators, general managers, marketers, tourism professionals, and anyone in a winery that has a responsibility to impact sales results. LTS is a perennial favorite and with its focus on wine marketing issues particular to Eastern states and markets, it is a natural fit for EWE. The program is chaired by Donniella Winchell, Executive Director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association. LTS will take place March 23-24, 2017.

EWE is the largest production wine industry conference and trade show east of the Rockies dedicated to wineries and growers. The event features a full day of in-depth, theme-focused Workshops on March 22, followed by a two-day Conference with sessions on Viticulture, Enology and Marketing, and a trade show featuring 200+ industry exhibitors. Wines & Vines is the official sponsor of EWE and Practical Business Solutions is the Official Conference sponsor.

EWE was held in Lancaster, PA, in March 2016. The previous year’s EWE took place in Syracuse and received great reviews from both attendees and exhibitors. The proximity to the wine regions of New York and Ontario is one of many advantages Syracuse provides as a location for both events.

“I am very pleased and excited to welcome License to Steal and its attendees to Syracuse to co-locate with the Eastern Winery Exposition,” declared Show Manager, Bob Mignarri. “Our large trade show and numerous networking and social events will be a big draw for LTS attendees. And Donnie Winchell’s experience in marketing programming and her network of marketing experts will benefit the entire Eastern industry.”

Added Donniella Winchell, “License to Steal is elated to be partnering with the largest and most respected wine conference and trade show in the East. After 12 years of offering a stand-alone marketing event, the EWE venue will allow LTS attendees to continue sharing dynamic marketing ideas but with an even wider audience during two energizing days in Syracuse. Attendees will not only have access to an exceptional collection of vendors in the trade show but also to mingle and network at social functions with those who annually participate in EWE.”

Eastern Winery Exposition Announces Direct-to-Consumer Workshop, Presented by Elizabeth Slater & Gary Finnan of Ovation Guild

SEPTEMBER 23, 2013

LANCASTER, PA — The Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE) is pleased to announce a new, intensive half-day workshop on Thursday, March 6. Creating The Ultimate Direct-to-Consumer Business will be presented by Elizabeth Slater and Gary Finnan, wine marketing professionals of the Ovation Guild. The Guild will also be the official sponsor of the workshop which will run concurrently with the distillation workshop following the EWE two-day conference March 4-5, 2014.

“We’re pleased that the Ovation Guild will present and sponsor this important marketing workshop” says Richard Leahy, Conference Director for Eastern Winery Exposition. “I have worked with Elizabeth Slater in the past and she has a strong loyal following in the regional wine scene. Her energy, bottom-line message and teaching style will be a great asset for winery marketers who want to learn more about direct-to-consumer marketing and why this is such an important topic for regional wineries. We also look forward to the contribution from her colleague Gary Finnan, who has extensive expertise working with wineries in strategic planning, design and direct-to-consumer concepts and programs, and how their joint approach will empower our attendees on this topic.”

Leahy further explains that the Direct-to-Consumer channel is much more than just establishing a wine club “because other wineries have them.” “This is why the industry refers to ‘direct-to-consumer’ instead of just ‘wine clubs’,” he says. “Elizabeth and Gary will give the big picture on everything involved in the direct-to-consumer channel, then give examples of wineries with successful programs, and show how wineries can transform their business models with powerful, results-oriented direct-to-consumer programs that work for their own winery’s business model.”

The workshop is modeled on the book Standing Ovation D-T-C: Four Elements of Creating the Ultimate Direct-to-Consumer Business, authored by Finnan and Slater. They explain that “the fastest growing area of the wine industry is the direct-to-consumer channel.” In addition to presenting an overview of how a wine business is structured, the book presents the key elements of creating a profitable and sustainable direct-to-consumer business that is in balance with a particular winery’s whole business vision. The book is also filled with actionable how-to tips and tactics that will kick start you into achieving your direct-to-consumer goals immediately, chapter by chapter.”

Eastern Winery Exposition Announces Distillation Workshop and American Distilling Institute Sponsorship in 2014

AUGUST 4, 2013

Lancaster, PA — The Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE) is pleased to announce its half-day workshop on Thursday, March 6, following the EWE two-day conference March 4-5, 2014. The workshop will focus on distillation, a rapidly growing segment of regional wine products. It will feature talks by the federal Tax and Trade Bureau on distilling regulations, and by various winemakers who also distill grape and other fruit brandies.

The American Distilling Institute (ADI), a national organization for distillers, will be the sponsor of the seminar, and ADI members will receive a 10% discount on any EWE conference registration options.

“We’re pleased to have the American Distilling Institute sponsor this workshop” says Richard Leahy, Conference Director for Eastern Winery Exposition. “Small-scale artisanal distillation is a rapidly-growing trend with regional farm wineries. New producers will receive valuable knowledge on product safety, federal regulations through seminars by TTB officials and current producers of fine distilled products. By offering this workshop in 2014, Eastern Winery Exposition adds a valuable extra dimension to its already highly worthwhile educational program.”

Bill Ownes, Founder and President of ADI, says “We are pleased to act as the official sponsor of Eastern Winery Exposition’s Thursday distilling workshop, and we welcome farm winery owners who become distillers as potential new members of the American Distilling Institute. We’re also pleased that existing ADI members will receive a 10% discount on EWE conference registration.”

The 2014 Eastern Winery Exposition takes place March 3-6 at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The half-day workshop on regulation and production and processing of fruit brandies will take place Thursday, March 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Eastern Winery Exposition  Announces Winner Of “Best New Money-Making Idea” Contest

Peter Oldak of Jewel Towne Vineyards Will Present at EWE on 3/7/13

December 10, 2012

The Eastern Winery Exposition is pleased to announce that Jewel Towne Vineyards in New Hampshire has won the contest for “Best New Money-Making Idea” for the 2013 conference. Peter Oldak, owner and winemaker of Jewel Towne Vineyards, submitted details for a Community Supported Winery, modeled after the highly successful Community Supported Agriculture (CSA’s) of local farms in which customers purchased a “share” of the farm’s harvest and picked it up on a weekly basis.

The program started on May first of this year and terminated at the end of August. In this 18 week period, customers picked up two bottles of wine that were selected by Peter Oldak, and $12,425 was raised with secondary sales amounting to an additional $3,654. “We were able to introduce these customers to our full list of our wines and thus broadened their knowledge and enjoyment of our available selections,” explains Oldak. “For us, this was a good alternative to a wine club. There were no packaging costs, no shipping costs, and no sales or excise taxes to collect to pay to out-of state agencies. Oldak adds that “For many we became their source for their household wine after CSW ended. Many expressed an interest in joining in next summer’s CSW.”

Oldak will present full details of the CSW program in the “Best New Event and Money-Making Ideas” seminar at the 2013 Eastern Winery Exposition on Thursday, March 7th, 3:10-4:10 p.m., along with fellow New Hampshire winery owner, Bob Manley of Hermit Woods Winery, who will present on a successful new regional wine festival he and other Lake District New Hampshire wineries launched last summer.

Registration for the 2013 Eastern Winery Exposition is now available online, with maximum early bird discount in effect through 12/15/12, at http://www.easternwineryexposition.com/registration/.

Fox Run Vineyards and Hermit Woods Winery Tie for First Place in the Eastern Winery Exposition Contest for Best Winery Event in 2012

October 5, 2012

In September EWE solicited submissions for a winery event contest on the EWE Facebook page. Participants were encouraged to describe a successful event they had developed and wanted to share with the broader community. Fox Run Vineyards of Penn Yan, New York (Finger Lakes) and Hermit Woods Winery of Sanbornton, NH have tied for first place with two very impressive wine industry events.

Fox Run Vineyards celebrated the 20th anniversary of their major event, the Garlic Festival, a free event held the first weekend of August. Ruth Osborn explains that the first Garlic Festival drew fewer than 100, but the 2012 festival drew about 11,000, an increase of over 10 to the power of four, with sales of over 250 cases of wine and an increase of 800 attendees over 2011, despite the economy. “We see repeat customers year after year along with many new faces,” explains Ruth. “The focus of this festival is on garlic of course, but it also focuses on everything local. The comment most often heard from our customers is ‘This is just such a nice festival! Nice vendors, nice attendees, great food & music and great atmosphere!.'”

Bob Manley, proprietor of Hermit Woods Winery, organized a very different kind of event, the first annual regional barrel tasting festival at the end of September for the six Lake Region wineries of New Hampshire. “The event was a huge success,” says Bob. Although the event had just wrapped up at the time of the contest, Bob was able to pull some quick figures together for EWE. “It looks like most of the six wineries served over 500 people in the course of two six-hour days. That is about five times the number of people most of our small wineries see on a typical weekend. At Hermit Woods we sold over $8,000 in wine and other products during the event, again, about three times what we might see on a typical weekend. If all the wineries have experienced similar numbers and I suspect they have, that means as a group we generated nearly $50,000 in wine sales in two six-hour days. We did this with less than $2,000 in marketing expense, and a few hundred dollars at each winery to support extra staff and volunteers.”

Bob also noted that aside from the benefit of sales and revenue, “all these numbers pale in comparison to the good will, increased knowledge of our region and industry, and tourism dollars that we spread around…not only do the six [NH Lake Region] wineries benefit, the whole region benefits!”

Fox Run Vineyards will be given $100 off the registration fee for the Eastern Winery Exposition in 2013.  Bob Manley has now signed on as a 2013 EWE Speaker and will present details on the barrel tasting at a marketing session in the conference titled “Best New Event and Money Saving Ideas” on Thursday, March 7th. As an EWE Speaker Bob will receive a complimentary registration.

Honorable Mentions go to Roxanne Moosher of Winery 32 in Loudoun County, VA and Reid’s Winery in Gettysburg, PA.

WRIGHT LABELS WILL USE SOLAR ENERGY TO POWER NC FACILITY

COMPANY WILL USE 364 SOLAR PANELS TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT THOMASVILLE, NC

January 19, 2012

A leader in packaging and marketing solutions for the beverage industry, Wright Labels, a division of Wright of Thomasville, said it was nearing the completion of installing solar panels at the company headquarters, relying on sun light to power its key production center. Wright anticipates the installation will be completed later this month. “The wine industry has been a leader in adopting renewable energy and solar solutions,” said Wright Labels President and CEO Greg Wright.  “This decision to go solar was not made for business purposes – there is still a huge financial commitment involved, even after tax incentives. Our company has always been committed to environmental stewardship and we felt this was the right thing to do from a social perspective.” In addition to state and federal tax incentives, the panels, which are connected directly to the grid at Duke Energy, will improve energy efficiency at the facility and eliminate Wright’s electric bill. With 364 solar panels, the company expects to generate 83.72 kilowatts from the solar array, which Duke will credit back to Wright. To illustrate their use of power, Wright Labels will feature a power generating meter on their website as well as in the facility’s main lobby. Before “going green” became trendy, Wright had already adopted eco-friendly policies, using recycled products, renewable soybean ink, and energy efficient lighting, among other things. Bill and Tom Wright founded Wright of Thomasville in 1961 on the idea that printing was a creative medium and the belief that “a promise made is a promise kept.” The Wright brothers focused their attention on providing exceptional printing for the action sports industries. The Wright family continues that tradition today by providing one-stop, turnkey, creative solutions for their clients’ graphic needs.  Today, the company is run by brothers, Greg and Don Wright who employs 153 people. With manufacturing partners in the United States and Brazil, as well as a Wright Global Graphics facility in China, the company delivers on its promise of exceptional value, and accurate delivery, regardless of the product’s final destination.
